Literary Society Speaker

A compelling talk on Syrian culture (and alchemy!)
The Achtiname of Muhammad, with translation

Literary Society was delighted to welcome poet and travel writer Marius Kociejowski to speak on Tuesday. Marius talked about his writings regarding the complexity of Syrian culture and heritage, mindful of the turmoil the country has experienced over the last four years. He questioned our preconceptions of Syria as divided, illustrating its capacity for harmony through the example of the Achtiname of Muhammad, a document that the Islamic Prophet signed in order to protect Christian monks. He went on to beautifully compare the process of writing to alchemy, explaining that in writing we similarly mix ‘raw materials’ to produce something of value.
