The best shows on UK Netflix

Because we all have days when we're at a loss for what to watch

As the days of summer approach so do those of exams and naturally, extreme procrastination. Although here at iPaulina we would 'never' encourage you to prioritise TV over work we know the importance of a good TV break ourselves so here are some of my recommendations of the best Netflix shows to watch when your brain just can't take any more revision...

(The trailer for each is linked below if you're craving a little more information)

If you're in the mood for political drama...

Designated Survivor - Starring Kiefer Sutherland, Designated Survivor tells the story of Tom Kirkman a relatively low-level politician who is thrust into the presidency when the Capitol is blown up, killing all those in line to the presidency other than Tom himself; he is the designated survivor. The plot thickens and the characters go to great lengths to uncover that all is not as it seems in Washington, all whilst Kirkman is forced to manage a new job he is completely unprepared for. It's got large-scale conspiracies, political tension and at the same time, you will fall in love with Kirkman's adorable daughter. Netflix currently releases a new episode every week with 19 already available and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys suspense or lives for a good political drama.

If you want to revisit Gossip Girl with a Pretty Little Liars-esque nature...

Riverdale - Honestly, I imagine there are very few people left in the world who have not seen Riverdale, it seems to be a popular topic in the dining room, but I just couldn't leave it out. Although centred around the mystery of the murder of a teenage boy in idealistic small town America, we are able to enjoy the friendships and high school dramas experienced by our favourite duo - Betty and Veronica (aka B&V) and their group of friends, including Jughead, played by our childhood sweetheart Cole Sprouse. Dubbed as the show where the Archie Comics meets Twin Peaks, the writers make you suspect almost every character while leaving the true nature of the murder shrouded in mystery for most of the show and the success it has experienced meant a second season was announced when we were barely halfway through the first. At the beginning I felt this was a truly ridiculous show, but I just couldn't stop watching. Now I think it is one of the best teen shows I have ever seen and I love its attention to detail. It is fair to say I am extremely devasted that the current season ends soon but also so excited for what we'll get to discover in the upcoming finale!

If a crime docu-series is what you're after...

American Crime Story: The People vs. O. J. Simpson - This dramatisation of O. J. Simpson's infamous 1994 trial is a real treat and don't just take it from me. It has been nominated for over 30 awards of which it has won over 20 including five Emmys and two Golden Globes. It follows the story of Simpson and the murder of his ex-wife from the very beginning to the final verdict and is truly gripping and will draw you in right from the first few minutes. Something I also really enjoyed was seeing was David Schwimmer take on the part of Robert Kardashian, a role extremely different from that of a paleontologist, alongside wonderful performances from John Travolta and Sarah Paulson. Whether you love a documentary, a legal drama or just great TV I would strongly recommend you give this a try.

If you're craving an old-school musical drama...

The Get Down - Set in New York in the 1970s, Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down follows the lives of a group of teenagers as they experience the rise of R&B and disco music and their dreams of entering the music industry as well as the tensions of the time. I admit this wasn't the kind of show I would usually watch, but with some wonderful young actors, an original storyline and some incredible songs, I soon found myself hooked and the longer episode makes it feel as though it never has to end. Even if it doesn't immediately sound like something you're going to love, I know I am very glad I gave it a shot.

This sums up the shows that have had me hooked the past few months, but a couple of Netflix original series have also captured my interest, including Girlboss and, for the child inside all of us, their adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events so I would also recommend having a look at those if you have the time.

Happy binging and I hope you enjoy these shows as much as I have!
